Other than giving big concerts in each city, the orchestra is separated into different small groups according to the genre of music we play. I'm in the celtic group. Ironically, none of us in the group (there are 6 of us) played celtic music before this except for Lily, the violinist (sitting on the right side of the picture in the school).
From the day we arrive in Washington D.C, we only had 2 proper practices. She had to teach us everything, from the tune to what each instrument should play to sound 'authentic' and good. We have 2 violinists, a bass, a cello and floutist, and of course, a harp.
We started our day at 7am today. We had to be in 2 elementary schools (for students from 8-11 years-old) at 9am and another at 2pm for an hour's workshop. We had rehearse on the night before at Caroline (Anthony and Elizabeth's host) home from 9-10pm.
We managed to rest a little while in the evening before going to Caroline's home for another house concert. She'd invited her friends to her home for dinner and to listen to us after she heard us rehearsing the night before. So we ended the day with another informal concert with Caroline and guests and of course, with my host family, Samy, Fufu and Samy Jr.
After a whole list of songs played, we had a wonderful conversation on ignorance of people about different cultures, countries and beliefs. Uncle Sam is such a knowledgeable guy. We all learnt alot from him. Not forgetting Fufu, who is so witty with her jokes and bubbly personality. Caroline was like the mother of all of us, who was kind enough to avail her home for us. We had the most fruitful day today.
Tomorrow, we'll have 2 more concerts/workshop to give. One in a school and another a home for single mums...
