It's been more than a month now. In line with my cooking habits, my roommate, a neighbour and I have gone to the Haymarket twice. Today is the second time... we were quite lazy to go at first, cos it was raining outside. According to the forecast, the rain won't stop until end of next week. So 'forced' ourselves to move our asses to the market, otherwise we'll have to 'die' of hunger the coming week...
Boy am I glad we did. I bought 4 pounds of salmon, which cost only $10! Gonna savor that chunk of meat for the next one or 2 weeks.
Last Thurday, I joined 2 members of the Acoustic Society of Berklee to support our teacher's gig in Cambridge. It was really an experience. Tony, our acoustic teacher, was the president of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants (NCAA), Acoustic Society of America (ASA) and the Chairman of the Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics in US. As his affiliation implies, he sounds like a nerd. To our surprise, he plays electric guitar in a '70s rock band and was dancing and 'singing' on stage during his gig. We were introduced to one of his supporter friend, who is another consultant in Acoustics. He bought us a couple of drinks and later for dinner. We discussed about many things under the sun and plan to write another paper to be presented in one of the ASA meetings.
Conducting class has also been fun. It's pressurizing having to stand in front of your classmates to conduct. As if it's not bad enough, you've to be commented by the teacher and classmates on your strength and weakness. If you do something wrong while conducting, the teacher won't hesitate to stop you immediately to correct your mistake. Yup, in front of the whole class. But it is not all that bad, cos everyone is given the same treatment! =)
We are now learning to conduct a short piece of Ravel's 'Mother Goose Suite' - The Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty. I received quite nice comments about my conducting in last Friday's class. I'm pleased for now. But I still have a lot to work on in que-ing, dynamics, etc...
Mid term test is end of the month. So fast. But I've enjoyed my classes so far. The conscious thought of my age is going to be a hindrance if I want to learn - because I have to make mistakes in order to learn. I've to put down my pride and carry humility.
Things have been going on pretty well thus far... heading back to my books and practice.
